According to the UN, it is too early to speak of genocide or ethnic cleansing, but there is “ample evidence” that both groups in the conflict in the Central African Republic have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity.
CAR’s widespread religious conflict began last year when mainly Muslim Seleka rebels seized power in the majority Christian country resulting in reprisal killings from self-defense militias known as anti-balaka. Though many anti-balaka self-identify as Christians, the leaders of CAR’s Christian churches have denounced their violence.
About a quarter of the population has been displaced with more than a million people have fleeing their homes.
