Militant Islamists poured grenades and gunfire into a Catholic church compound in the Central African Republic capital of Bangui on Wednesday, killing an undetermined number of people, including a priest.
The Associated Press said its journalists counted five bodies at local hospitals, but also cited a priest who estimated as many as 30 people had been killed. The Muslim-dominated Séléka rebel coalition disbanded in January after a nearly year-long rampage that killed hundreds of Christians and displaced thousands. Since January, it has been Muslims on the run in fear of retaliatory violence. The United Nations has dispatched international peacekeepers to the region, but the AP said Wednesday’s attack was “the most brazen blamed on Muslim fighters” since Séléka’s demise.
