Pakistani police in Punjab have opened a blasphemy case on Sunday against 68 lawyers after they staged a protest last week against a police officer.

The police complaint stated that the protesting lawyers had insulted a close companion of Islam’s Prophet Mohammed while they were demonstrating outside a district police station.

The lawyers claimed to be demanding protesting against one of the police officer’s for illegally detaining and beating one of their colleagues.

“Our protest will continue unless the blasphemy case is withdrawn,” Akhtar Khan Baloch, general secretary of the bar association, told ucanews.com.

It is not yet known if any Christians are among the 68 charged. But the case is an example of the lengths to which some in Pakistan will take the country’s anti-blasphemy laws, which have been used extensively against non-Muslims in that country.
