Asia Bibi, the Christian woman on death row in Pakistan for blasphemy, has appealed to the only court in the country that can now save her.
Bibi’s lawyer, Saiful Malook, filed the appeal to Pakistan’s Supreme Court on 24 November asking that it reconsiders deficiencies in her case.
After a previous appearance at the appeals court in Lahore her legal team failed to overturn her conviction, despite a legal loophole in the trial. In his first interview after the Lahore hearing, Bibi’s counsel, Naeem Shakir, told World Watch Monitor that justice for the case “is increasingly in the hands of the extremists”.
The 50-year-old mother of five was sentenced to hang after being convicted four years ago of insulting the Prophet Mohammed during an argument with a Muslim woman over a bowl of water.
“We expect an early hearing of the appeal and hope the proceedings will be over in one year,” said Malook.
