A government campaign is underway in China to eradicate unregistered churches, according to Release International. The agency says members of unregistered house churches in Shandong province in eastern China are visited in their homes and told to attend the government-approved churches of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement.
Meanwhile, Christian Solidarity Worldwide said it is concerned about a “crackdown” on unregistered house churches in Xinjiang, northwest China. It reports that many house churches have been closed down, fined or had members arrested.
China Aid reported in September 2012 the existence of a secret government document which promotes the “complete eradication of house churches”.
