The killing of a pastor in the Majengo area of Mombasa has led to fears of a return to insecurity in the area.
Reports say that gunmen opened fire at the Maximum Revival Ministries church compound on Sunday 11 January, in a raid that left worshippers running for safety.
The police claim that the attack, which left assistant pastor, George Karidhimba Muriki dead, is an isolated incident.
No group has yet claimed responsibility but in the past churches in Majengo have come under attack from Islamist militants, including two weeks after the Westgate shopping mall attack.
Experts say this this latest incident appears to be part of an ongoing pattern.
The two faith groups had co-existed peacefully for years, until Kenya sent troops to Somalia in pursuit of Al-Shabaab Islamic militants who have control of much of Kenya’s eastern neighbour, leaving it as a “failed state”.
