A group of Ugandan rebels are suspected of killing more than 20 people in an Oct. 16 attack on the town of Beni in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Beni’s mayor said the Allied Democratic Forces, an Islamist force with hopes of establishing Islamic law in Uganda, was behind the killings. Most of the victims are reported to be women and children.
The attacks were reported to the BBC by a local pastor. “Even though it is not entirely sure that Christians have been specifically targeted, the fact that a pastor reported the incident makes it highly likely,” said Ashagrie Abdi, an analyst for Open Doors International, a charity that supports Christians who live under pressure because of their faith.
A UN official says that 70 people have been killed in the past week in the eastern region of the DR Congo. Thousands of people have fled their homes.
