Mariam Yehya Ibrahim Ishag, 27, gave birth to a baby girl at a prison near Sudan’s capital, Khartoum.
She is allowed to nurse her new-born baby for two years before the death sentence is fulfilled and her 20-month-old son has been in prison with her since she was arrested.
Mariam, a wife and mother of two, is awaiting the death penalty and 100 lashes for refusing to renounce Christianity and allegedly committing adultery according to national law.
Sudan’s version of Islamic law, states Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslims. The government claims Mariam was born a Muslim, and consequently committed adultery when she married a Christian man. She denies these claims.
Her lawyer told CNN that her husband, Daniel Wani, “is a U.S. citizen who uses a wheelchair and totally depends on her for all details of his life”.
